Really Long Rintones on your iPhone
Posted by Sam Hobson on November 6, 2009 – 10:23 pm |  Comments

As most of you know, Apple is a real pain-in-the-ass when it comes to certain things.  One of those things is ringtones.  Most of you know that you cannot load a ringtone longer than 40 seconds on your iPhone.  Well, I figured out how to do just that, and I’ve recorded a video showing you how to do it.  In addition, I also how show you how to create the ringtone, for those of you who may not know how.

Watch the video HERE.  It will link you to a fullscreen YouTube player.  I also recommend you watch this in HD.  It will take a bit of time to load, but it will be easier to see.  In standard quality, it isn’t that easy to see.

Sonos Zoneplayer S5 Now Available
Posted by Chris Leckness on November 6, 2009 – 7:51 pm |  Comments

Sonos_S5_iPhone

With the iPhone application, you can play music wirelessly from iTunes and/or the internet in any room of your house or apartment. The Sonos Zoneplayer S5 costs $399 each and you need one for each room you want to set up. You can grab one for multiple rooms and control them from your iPhone or using the free PC or Mac desktop client. You really need to watch this demo video to understand what this is and how cool it is. The setup is a tad pricy, but if the sound quality is a good as I have heard it is, it would be worth it for sure. I really like being able to control different rooms at once. Like I said, watch this video and you will see what I mean. Really innovative idea they have here.

Check out the Press Release after the break…

Hold The Press: Apple is hiring someone. Chill People!
Posted by Chris Leckness on November 6, 2009 – 4:04 pm |  Comments

Ok, so the are rumblings all over the iPhone blogosphere that Apple is hiring a iPhone OS Platform Security Manager. Ok, cool. What’s the job description?

The Core OS group is looking for a talented and inspired manager to lead a team focused on the platform security of iPhone OS. The team is responsible for secure booting and installation of the OS, partitioning and hardening of security domains within the OS, cryptographic services, and risk analysis of security threats. The team is made up of a variety of security experts with backgrounds in system security and reverse engineering.

This position requires a very technical and hands-on leader, someone with a passion for understanding security exploits and coming up with innovative methods to create secure platforms. You must be a highly self-motivated individual who seeks to create a dynamic and creative team environment in which old problems are solved in new and innovative ways.

oh-noesI didn’t see “…to stop people from unlocking and jailbreaking the iphone” in there, did you? What is everyone considering this an offensive move against the iPhone hacking community without warrant? I mean seriously, it could be for just that or perhaps it could be someone to lead a team to make the iPhone more secure for enterprise. Maybe? I mean it could very well be someone to help make the iPhone more secure on networks. It could be plugging up some holes that may or may not already be exploited by hackers. It still could mean an end to unlocking and jailbreaking, but come on people, don’t assume the worst from a damn job listing. You guys do know that the iPhone isn’t very secure right?

AT&T Acquires Centennial Wireless
Posted by Adam Wyss on November 6, 2009 – 2:08 pm |  Comments

AT&T heart Centennial Wireless

Today, the FCC approved AT&T’s purchase of Centennial Wireless.  Centennial is a Fort Wayne, IN based regional carrier who provides coverage in the midwest, southwest, and in Puerto Rico.  The purchase will cost AT&T only a cool $944 million.  It will add 893,000 customers, and more importantly, some sweet 850mhz 3G spectrum in those areas that Centennial serves.  Current Centennial stockholders will receive $8.50/share and AT&T is claiming to have all Centennial stores rebranded to AT&T stores by January 2010.  Being a Fort Wayne, IN native, I am sad to see this local company be bought out as it has been a big success for the 2 guys who founded the company, however as an AT&T subscriber, I am glad to see our already good coverage get even better.

What this means for iPhone users is yet to be seen but I’m sure things can only get better in terms of coverage.  Being in Centennial’s home market, I’m sure we’ll be the first to have the “switch flipped” so I’ll keep an eye on my iPhone’s bars and let you all know how things are going in terms of the AT&T/Centennial network merger.

iPhone MVP How To: Jailbreak, Unlock, and Tether your stock iPhone 3G/3GS
Posted by Adam Wyss on November 6, 2009 – 1:44 pm |  Comments

IMG_0057

Before we get to the good stuff I should warn you that hacking your iPhone WILL void your warranty and following these instructions could very well get you a higher than normal bill from AT&T or whoever your carrier is that does not support iPhone tethering officially.  You could potentially screw up your phone and if you follow these steps, iPhone MVP and myself are NOT liable for anything you screw up.

This tutorial is for those of you who are NOT currently jailbroken.  I have a separate tutorial for those already jailbroken right here. After you complete these steps, you will be jailbroken, unlocked, and have tethering enabled.  This is everything you will ever need in your iPhone life!  Everything you need is just past the break!
